7 Interview Questions to Ask the Right Hire
The S.C.A.L.E Formula – Step #3: Build an Alliance. Just like the thousands of entrepreneurs that I have worked with, you need to ask the right questions to interview the right hire. The massive success that I am talking about, scaling your business to make the big shift from entrepreneur to 7-figure enterprise, depends on building a strong and talented team. Here are 7 interview questions for business owners to ask the right hire from my playbook, so you end up with a team you love to be around.
How do you Improve Yourself?
Looking For: Constant self-improvement. The right hire will share your tenacity, always growing and improving. How else do you survive as an entrepreneur? Staying not only competitive but relevant requires reflection. And, to make the big shift from entrepreneur to 7-figure enterprise requires an alliance of like-minded team members. Your business is only as strong as your key players. That is why a strong and talented team you love to be around is a must.
Follow-up Question: Who inspires you and why?
What do you Look For in a Company?
Looking For: Open and honest answers. Are they willing to settle? The right hire will be open and honest in what they are looking for and what they need. To scale your business to the next level, you need a strong and talented team – a team you love to be around AND that loves you! You are your business, and your passion got you here. The wrong hire will tell you what they think you want to hear. The right hire will give it to you straight and help you build your alliance.
Follow-up Question: Did you build lasting relationships while at your last job?
What do you Like about Our Business?
Looking For: Problems and solutions. Ask this question if you are looking for integrity. In my experience, to build an alliance requires integrity and honesty when confronting problems and solutions. Part 1 encourages honesty. This should be 5% of the answer. Part 2 provides insight if they are solution focused. And, this should be 95% of the answer. That is honestly the difference between a team of entrepreneurs and the alliance of a 7-figure enterprise.
Follow-up Question: How would you change what you don’t like?
If you were Starting a Company tomorrow, what would be its TOP 3 Priorities?
Looking For: Priorities. What are their priorities? And, how do they prioritize? You need to know! Every good relationship starts with a foundation of trust, and every alliance starts with shared values that result in a strong and talented team that you love to be around. I believe in communication, self-awareness, and flexibility. What do you believe in? Make sure you align with the right hire.
Follow-up Question: If priorities change, how would you help your team make a shift in goals?
What are you Curious about?
Looking For: Intellectual curiosity. A must for a team that will make the big shift from entrepreneur to 7-figure enterprise with you. An alliance is a team filled to the brim with intellectual curiosity – doers that don’t sit on the sideline, thinkers that don’t just watch problems being solved. The right hire will jump in! If they don’t know the answer, they will seek out an answer and find a solution.
Follow-up Question: Can you teach me something as if I have never done it before?
(Suggestions: A puzzle, lesson, skill)
Tell me about your Greatest Accomplishments. What are you MOST Proud of?
Looking For: Work ethic, values, and a belief system. This question is a smokescreen. It will help you filter through the wrong hires, and leave you with all right ones instead. You are not interested in what they did, but how they did it. What do their greatest accomplishments reveal about their work ethic and belief system? And, do they align with the values of your business? Build an alliance, a team of strong and talented individuals with that “wow” factor.
Follow-up Question: What are you most proud of?
How do you Fail?
Looking For: Perception of failure. An entrepreneur’s world is filled with both failures and successes. Make sure you understand how the right hire perceives failure. Massive success comes out of learning from and answering to failure.
Ultimately, we choose our level of comfort when it comes to failure, and the choice comes when we choose how to react to it. It is our choice when failure stops us from moving forward and succeeding. How do they react? The right hire will never stop pushing to improve, grow, fail, learn and succeed!
But, most importantly, do not expect more than you would expect of yourself. You deserve to hire a strong and talented team you love to be around. With an alliance, you can open up a whole new world to scale your business to a 7-figure enterprise. Align your questions with the expectations you want to be met and the problems you want to be solved. And, say goodbye to hiring all of the wrong employees and say hello to hiring an alliance instead! Use these interview questions for business owners to narrow down the pool to the right people.
