Build a Better Business: How A Business Coach Can Help You

Build a Better Business

Do you want to build a better business? Do you have faith in yourself? Successful business owners often say that believing in themselves was one of the most important steps to building their business. A business mentor will help you develop more self confidence and appreciation for your gifts, talents and skills and will lead you down a path of self belief and support that will catapult your business forward…light years ahead of where you are now.

“It’s always good to have a helping hand… Find a mentor… Believe in yourself.”
~Richard Branson~

Richard Branson and I agree. If you choose to believe in anything, believe in yourself. That is my soundest advice. Keeping the faith in yourself leads to your success. Invest in your future as a business owner by investing in a business coach or mentor that can help you breakthrough barriers… And build a better business! Today, I am going to share one of my firmest beliefs with you – Everyone thrives with a coach. The true calling card of a business leader is that they do not stand alone. In fact, they breakthrough barriers and build a better business because they have a business coach and mentor. Think for a moment.

“The CALLING CARD of a business leader is that they DO NOT stand alone. ”

At Apple, Steve Jobs had Steve Wozniak. Behind Microsoft was both Bill Gates and Paul Allen. And, complementary forces combined, when Google was created by both Larry Page and Segrey Brin. A business leader propels forward with the help of others. Do not chase success – Let success chase you. Let it follow the people you choose to align yourself with and the actions you decide to take.

“Do NOT Chase Success – Let SUCCESS chase YOU. Let it FOLLOW the people you choose to ALIGN yourself with And the ACTIONS you decide to take.”

What is the common denominator? What lies between an everyday business owner and a thriving entrepreneur standing at the pinnacle of innovation? They surround themselves with good people. A business coach or mentor can help, by aligning you with people who share passion and complement weaknesses. The diamond in the rough stays in the rough without an experienced confidante and skilled sculptor, who can shape your future and carve your pinnacle. In my opinion, a coach is a must. I’ve had a coach for most of my business life, and I, for certain, would not be where I am today without my coaches.

3 Musts Haves For Your Business Coach or Mentor
If you’re still reading, you’re my kind of business owner, and you have already taken my advice to heart. A coach is a must. But, when you are in the market for a business coach or mentor, it’s not just about the right-fit. If you’re a diamond in the rough, you need an exceptional jeweler, a trained eye that has already cultivated the qualities and experience that you desire. Its time you learned to size up the perfect business coach or mentor because doing so will help you breakthrough barriers and build a better business.

Here are three musts to work with a coach:
1. Have they ever started and run a business – successfully?
I’ve Run my own Businesses Successfully. If my three plus decades of experience have taught me anything, it’s that hands-on experience is everything. After launching and running ten businesses, as a serial entrepreneur, I have learned that you cannot successfully coach without it. A business coach or mentor can only help if they have walked the walk, treading a day, a week, a year, a decade in your shoes. Richard Branson, a global entrepreneur himself, singled this out as one of the problems with business consulting. The steep learning curving of having done it yourself, as an innovator, marketer, sales person and more, teaches you more than any article, book or seminar can. If you want a 7-figure business, find someone who has successfully created a 7-figure business.

2. Have they learned from failure?
I’ve experienced Failure and learned. Failure is a part of the entrepreneurial equation, as important as the successes to reaching the pinnacle. With experience, a good business coach or mentor who has failed in the process of breaking through barriers and building a better business can help you navigate the landmines and rebound when you make mistakes. When you learn from a coach, you should and will learn from the lessons they have cultivated, which is a direct result of reflecting on their own failures. What instincts were missing or misleading? What factors played a role? It all teaches us something valuable.

3. They must know a Bad Idea from a Good Idea.
This is a must. With all of it combined, your business coach or mentor will have done their homework ten-times over. A breakthrough and building a better business comes from an insatiable hunger for knowledge and persistent evaluation of expectations. A coach must be the living proof of this and, therefore, know the difference between a bad and good idea.

4 Ways a Business Coach or Mentor Can Help
Okay, if you have gotten this far and you currently do not have a coach, what are you waiting for? Here are 4 action steps to help you:

1. Take the Red Pill. And, Create your Reality. Do you remember the movie The Matrix? The moral of the story was that all of life, good and bad, comes down to choices. Do you choose the red pill or the blue pill? Choose to not be like most people. Be courageous like Neo in The Matrix. Choose to create and take charge of your own destiny, even if it takes more risks with little guarantees. Don’t stay caught up in the matrix of a fabricated world and tripped up by a predestined story for yourself.

Nobody becomes a leader and creates change by choosing the blue pill. A coach will stand before you, like Orpheus did with Neo, and ask you to choose. Of course, a mentor will help you make the right choice and create your own reality. Reaching your dreams by breaking through barriers to build a better business takes a business coach or mentor to lay it out on the line for you. It’s black and white, or in this case red or blue. Which will you choose?

2. Take Risks. And, know when to take them. If you are determined to make your business a success, then find a business coach or mentor that inspires self-belief. To be successful as an entrepreneur, you cannot be afraid of risk. Fear is debilitating. Let your coach be your sounding board and metric for when to take risks.

Breaking through barriers is necessary to build a better business, and that requires risk. A coach can help you reframe risks into opportunities. You know what Richard Branson hears when he hears “risk” – opportunity. I have built my career around taking healthy risks to achieve new ways of thinking. And, I have had mentors all along my journey that have helped me decide when to take those risks. Let a business coach or mentor help you decide when to pull the trigger.

3. A Coach is your Calling Card. And, they will Call you Out, on Good or Bad decisions. Let’s face it. We all have issues, and no one is perfect. Some people have therapists, but an entrepreneur has a business coach or mentor. Enlist an enlightened, experienced coach to hold you accountable to your dreams, promises and helps you eliminate excuses.

A coach is a paid mentor, intrinsically and extrinsically invested in your success. To breakthrough barriers requires self-belief and building a business requires self-reflection. With a business coach or mentor you call out your own BS and allow for a space of no judgment. It’s amazing what you can achieve when you get down to brass tax, cutting that diamond in the rough into a 5 Carat diamond.

4. Think Big Picture. And, Build for the Long Haul. Believe it or not, few people actually lead. A business coach or mentor can help by illuminating what it takes to lead, to tangibly lead and influence people. That is a breakthrough in itself. A coach has learned to build relationships – that is the key to leading and being a leader.

Leadership is not a management role or position at the top. You’re a business owner – that comes with the territory. It’s not a new title, new list of responsibilities or important project. Again, you’re an entrepreneur, you are constantly adapting to wear different hats and evolving to innovate new products.

A business coach, a mentor, will help you build a better business by thinking big picture. The picture is about building relationships, and consistently. You need a push and reminder to engage, connect and build foundation. Real attention to relationships is a mindful practice that a coach can help you cultivate. You will lead by spending less time leading and more time investing in the relationships with those around you and supporting you. And, I promise, it pays ten-fold!
